Credit unions consistently beat bank APRs by 0.5–1.5 points. Here are the national credit unions worth joining specifically for auto financing — and what membership actually requires.
Why credit unions usually win on APR
Credit unions are not-for-profit. They return surplus to members as lower loan rates and higher deposit rates. For auto loans specifically, the typical CU advantage is 0.5–1.5 percentage points below bank/online-lender rates at the same credit tier.
On a $30,000 loan over 60 months, that's $700–$2,200 in total interest saved.
National CUs worth joining just for the auto loan
- PenFed Credit Union — open to anyone in the US (just $5 deposit to a savings account). Among the lowest national APRs.
- Navy Federal — military, family, and DoD. Best-in-class subprime rates if you qualify.
- Alliant — open to anyone via a $5 charity donation. Strong on used-car loans + private-party purchases.
- Consumers Credit Union (IL) — open nationally via a $5 ACU membership. Often the rate-leader for excellent credit.
What membership actually requires
The "credit union" mystique has receded — most national CUs let anyone join with:
- A $5–$25 one-time donation to an affiliated charity, OR
- A small savings account deposit (often $5)
That's it. The qualifying step takes 4 minutes online.
Hidden upsides
- Most CUs allow private-party used car loans (most banks don't)
- Older vehicle age caps — many CUs finance 15+ year-old cars
- Local CUs sometimes beat national rates for in-state buyers
How to shop a credit union APR
- Join the CU (5 minutes).
- Get a pre-approved offer (soft credit pull).
- Use it as a floor when negotiating dealer financing.
Even if the dealer beats the CU rate by 0.1 points, the CU did the work of forcing the dealer's hand. Always pre-shop a credit union before stepping into F&I.
