Balloon Payment

A large lump-sum payment due at the end of an otherwise low-payment loan.

Balloon loans keep monthly payments artificially low but require a large final payment (often the residual value of the car). They're rare in U.S. auto finance and typically risky — only consider one if you're certain you can refinance or sell before the balloon date.
