PIP (Personal Injury Protection)

Insurance that covers your own medical bills regardless of who caused the accident.

PIP is required in no-fault states (Florida, Michigan, New York, etc.) and optional elsewhere. Even in optional states, PIP can fill gaps that health insurance won't cover — like lost wages and household services.

When you need it

Required in no-fault states (FL, MI, NJ, NY, PA, MA, KY, KS, MN, ND, HI, UT, DC). Even in optional states, PIP covers wage replacement and household services your health insurance won't.

What it costs you

Typically $50-$200/yr depending on coverage limit. In Michigan, choosing $250k PIP vs unlimited saves $200-$500/yr — but caps your medical payout at $250k.
