Deductible

The amount you pay out of pocket on a claim before insurance kicks in.

Common auto insurance deductibles: $250, $500, $1,000, $2,500. Raising your deductible from $500 to $1,000 typically cuts premiums 10-15%. Don't raise it higher than you can afford to pay in cash tomorrow.

When you need it

Higher deductible = lower premium, but you pay more out-of-pocket per claim. Pick a deductible you could realistically pay tomorrow without using a credit card.

What it costs you

Raising your deductible from $500 → $1,000 saves about $100-$200/yr on average. Raising it $500 → $2,500 saves $300-$500/yr — but only worth it if you have an emergency fund.
