Comprehensive Insurance

Coverage for non-collision damage: theft, vandalism, weather, fire, animal strikes.

Comprehensive is optional unless required by a lender or lessor. It's worth keeping on newer cars; on cars worth less than 10x the annual premium, dropping comprehensive often makes sense.

When you need it

If you have an active auto loan or lease, your lender requires it. If you own the car outright and it's worth less than $4,000, dropping comprehensive often makes the math work in your favor.

What it costs you

Typically $150-$450/yr. Dropping it on a paid-off older car can save $200-$400/yr — but you self-insure against theft, hail, fire, and animal strikes.
