Banks usually require an SSN. But ITIN-friendly auto lenders (Bank of America, Banco Popular, several credit unions) write loans on Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers. Here's the path.

Quick answers

Can I get a car loan in cash if I can't find an ITIN lender?
Yes — used vehicles under $7,500 are often purchased in cash, with private sellers more flexible on identification. The trade-off: no credit-building benefit, and you bear full risk on the purchase.
Will an ITIN auto loan help me build U.S. credit?
Yes — the loan is reported to Experian and TransUnion under your ITIN's credit file (Equifax separately tracks ITIN files). Consistent on-time payments build the same credit score as an SSN-based loan would.
Do ITIN auto loans require permanent residency?
No — they're available to non-resident aliens with valid ITINs. Lenders care about U.S. tax-filing history and income stability, not immigration status.

What an ITIN is

An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a 9-digit number issued by the IRS to individuals who are not eligible for a Social Security Number but need to file U.S. taxes. Common holders:

  • Non-resident aliens working in the U.S.
  • Resident aliens without work authorization
  • Spouses or dependents of U.S. citizens / residents
  • Foreign students with tax obligations

For most of these groups, an ITIN is the only form of taxpayer ID they have. Mainstream auto lenders typically don't accept ITINs because their underwriting engines key off SSNs.

Lenders that DO accept ITINs

Bank of America Auto Loans: ITIN-accepted at all 4,000+ branches. Requires 2+ years of tax filing history under the ITIN. Standard APR pricing (no ITIN-penalty). FICO floor: 640.

Banco Popular (NY, NJ, FL, CA, IL, TX): Specialty ITIN auto-loan products. Accepts as little as 12 months tax history. APR pricing 0.5-1 point higher than SSN equivalent. FICO floor: 600.

Self-Help Federal Credit Union (NC, CA, FL, TX, IL, WI): Mission-driven CU that explicitly serves immigrant communities. ITIN auto loans at member rates. No FICO floor; manual underwriting.

Latino Community Credit Union (NC): Same model. ITIN borrowers get full member benefits including auto-loan pricing.

Mission Federal Credit Union (CA): Accepts ITINs for auto loans. Requires San Diego County or military-base residence.

myAutoLoan marketplace: Aggregator that surfaces ITIN-friendly lenders in your state. One application; multiple offers.

What documents you'll need

  1. ITIN card / letter from IRS (with the 9-digit number)
  2. Last 2 years of tax returns filed under the ITIN
  3. Proof of income (most recent 3 months pay stubs, OR business bank statements if self-employed)
  4. Proof of residence (utility bill, lease, or property deed)
  5. Government-issued photo ID (passport, foreign driver's license, U.S. state ID)
  6. Larger-than-standard down payment (15-25% minimum vs. 10% for SSN borrowers)

The APR premium (and how to minimize it)

ITIN borrowers typically pay 0.5-1.5 percentage points HIGHER APR than equivalent-FICO SSN borrowers. Why: smaller lender pool, less competition.

Strategies to close the gap:

  • Larger down payment — 20%+ down typically waives the ITIN premium
  • Co-signer with SSN — drops APR by 1-2 percentage points
  • Established U.S. credit — even thin-file (1-2 credit cards, 6+ months history) helps significantly
  • Existing banking relationship — most ITIN-accepting lenders prioritize their own customers

The DACA / TPS exception

DACA recipients (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and TPS (Temporary Protected Status) holders typically have SSNs even without permanent residency. They qualify for mainstream auto-loan products under standard underwriting — no ITIN-specific path needed. Verify your SSN status before assuming you need an ITIN loan.

Beware of predatory ITIN lenders

Some dealers and subprime lenders advertise "ITIN-friendly" loans with APRs of 18-25%. Compare to legitimate ITIN-accepting credit unions where rates run 7-11%. The premium for the "ITIN-friendly" branding can be 10+ percentage points — totaling $5,000-$12,000 in extra interest on a typical 60-month loan.

Always shop 3+ legitimate ITIN-accepting lenders before accepting an offer.
