Out-the-Door Price Calculator (Title, Tax + Fees)

The sticker price isn't the out-the-door price. Add sales tax, title fee, registration, and dealer doc fees. We'll show your real total.

What this calculator answers

Every dealer ad shows the sticker price. None of them show the out-the-door price — the actual check you write — until you're already in the finance manager's office at the end of a 3-hour negotiation. This calculator does that math upfront so you walk into the dealership knowing the real number. Expect 8-12% to be added on top of the sticker by the time taxes and fees clear.

Plug in the negotiated vehicle price (NOT MSRP — negotiate first), your state (drives the sales-tax rate and base title + registration fee), and any trade-in value the dealer has agreed to. We pre-fill state-specific tax rates from our regulatory database (updated quarterly) plus the typical title, registration, and documentation-fee ranges per state. You'll see four line items: subtotal, sales tax, government fees, and dealer doc fee — each itemised so you can challenge any one that seems off.

Use the result to verify the dealer's out-the-door quote before you sign anything. Dealers in some states (Florida, Texas, Georgia) routinely charge $499-895 dealer doc fees that aren't required by law — many will reduce or waive them if you push back. Some states cap doc fees by statute; we flag the cap if your state has one. Bring this calculator's number to the finance office and ask them to itemise their out-the-door quote against it.

This is an estimate, not a binding number. Sales-tax rates can vary at the county or city level (we use the state base rate). Some states tax the price AFTER the trade-in credit, others tax the full price before — we apply your state's rule but verify on your registration paperwork. Some lenders also roll GAP insurance, extended warranties, or service contracts into the financed total at the finance desk; those are negotiable and should not appear here.

What to do next

Out-the-door price math kills more deals than APR does — most buyers under-budget by $1,500-$3,500 on title + tax + fees alone. Once you know your real OTD ceiling, lock in a competitive APR floor before you negotiate sticker. The two together set your real buying power.

Assumes: Tax + title + registration tables source from each state's DMV publication of record (annual refresh). Doc fees + dealer-prep charges are negotiable — the calculator returns the statutory minimums, not the dealer's worksheet markup.
