UM/UIM (Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist)

Coverage that pays when you're hit by a driver with no insurance or insufficient insurance.

Critical coverage given that ~12% of U.S. drivers are uninsured (higher in some states). UM/UIM typically costs $30-$80/year and is some of the cheapest insurance you can buy relative to the risk.

When you need it

Critical in states with high uninsured-driver rates (FL, MS, NM, TN, MI all above 18%). Pays for YOUR injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or can't be found (hit-and-run).

What it costs you

Typically $50-$150/yr added to your policy. Best dollar-per-dollar protection after liability — even a moderate ER visit after a no-insurance crash runs $5,000-$15,000.
