What we like
- +Strong agent network (~10,000 agencies across the U.S.)
- +Multiple product flavors — Drivewise telematics + Milewise pay-per-mile in eligible states
- +Strong A.M. Best financial strength rating (A+, Superior)
- +Bundling discount with Allstate home/renters is meaningful (commonly 10–25% off auto)
What we don't
- −Rarely the lowest published rate in comparison shopping — typically mid-pack
- −Drivewise discounts often smaller than Progressive Snapshot's equivalent
- −Underwriting tightens significantly after a single at-fault claim
- −Milewise is only available in a subset of states
Editor's verdict
Allstate is the fourth-largest U.S. auto insurer (NAIC 2024) and a hybrid of the State Farm captive-agent model with stronger digital tooling. Drivewise (telematics) and Milewise (pay-per-mile in eligible states) give shoppers more product flavors than most competitors. Pricing is usually mid-pack — rarely the lowest, rarely outrageous. Claims-satisfaction scores are competitive with State Farm in J.D. Power's regional auto-claims surveys. Strong choice if you want an agent relationship AND a real app; weaker choice if you only care about lowest published rate.

Allstate FAQ
What's the difference between Drivewise and Milewise?+
Drivewise is a telematics-discount program — install the app, drive normally, earn an ongoing discount based on safe-driving signals (no harsh braking, low-mileage hours, no late-night driving). Milewise is a pay-per-mile product where you pay a low daily base rate plus a per-mile charge. Drivewise is for normal-mileage drivers who want a discount; Milewise is for low-mileage drivers (under ~7,000 miles/year) where the per-mile model is genuinely cheaper than a traditional flat-rate policy.
Is Allstate worth the higher premium vs GEICO?+
Maybe — depends on how you value claims service vs. price. Allstate consistently scores higher than GEICO in J.D. Power's claims-satisfaction surveys, and the local agent model means a real person handles your claim escalation. If you're the kind of driver who'd rather pay ~10–15% more for a smoother post-accident experience, Allstate makes the case. If you want the cheapest possible policy from a financially-stable carrier, GEICO will usually win on price.
Does Allstate offer rideshare coverage?+
Yes — Allstate's Ride for Hire endorsement is available in most states. Coverage activates during phase 1 (app on, no passenger) when the rideshare company's commercial coverage is thinnest. Pricing is competitive with GEICO and Progressive's rideshare endorsements.
