Editorial standards

Most VSC providers exclude salvage and rebuilt-title vehicles entirely. Endurance and Concord cover branded titles in specific tiers. Here's the 4 providers that will, the documentation required, and the higher premium math.

Quick answers

Will an insurance company write full coverage on a salvage title?
Most major carriers (GEICO, Progressive, Allstate) write only liability + comprehensive on salvage titles. Full [collision coverage](/guides/collision-coverage-explained) is rarely available. State Farm and Liberty Mutual sometimes write [full coverage](/guides/full-coverage-auto-insurance) on rebuilt titles with inspection.
Can a salvage title be "cleared" or "washed"?
Some states allow title rebranding after rebuild + inspection (e.g., NM, OK, MO have lenient rules). But the original brand remains in the NMVTIS (National Motor Vehicle Title Information System) database. CARFAX/AutoCheck will surface it forever.
How much does a salvage title reduce vehicle value?
Typically 30-60%. A vehicle worth $20,000 clean might be worth $8,000-$14,000 rebuilt.

What "salvage" means for warranties

A salvage title means the vehicle was declared a total loss by an insurance company — either from an accident, flood, hail, theft recovery, or vandalism. The state DMV issues a "salvage" or "branded" title, signaling the vehicle's history to future buyers.

After repairs and inspection, the vehicle can be retitled as "rebuilt" or "reconstructed" — but it carries the brand FOREVER.

For warranty purposes:

  • Salvage title (unrepaired): NOT eligible for any VSC — vehicle cannot be legally driven
  • Rebuilt / reconstructed title: Eligible for SOME VSCs, with restrictions
  • Title-washed (illegally moved through states): Not eligible — and possibly fraud

Why most VSC providers exclude salvage

Insurance companies and warranty underwriters use the salvage brand as a high-risk signal for:

  • Hidden damage that wasn't repaired
  • Cut corners during the rebuild
  • Pre-existing weakened components
  • Higher-than-normal claim frequency

The industry standard: 5-10x higher claim frequency on rebuilt vs clean-title vehicles.

The 4 providers that DO cover branded titles

1. Endurance — Salvage Title Coverage

Endurance offers a specialized salvage-title VSC tier with these rules:

Eligibility:

  • Rebuilt or reconstructed title (not pure salvage)
  • Vehicle passed state inspection post-rebuild
  • Documentation of all repairs (Carfax or AutoCheck report)
  • Vehicle under 100,000 miles at policy start
  • No flood-brand status

Coverage tiers:

  • Endurance Select Premier (Salvage version): $2,800-$4,000 for 5 years / 75,000 miles
  • Endurance Supreme (Salvage version): $4,500-$6,500 for 7 years / 100,000 miles
  • Limits: Battery, electrical, climate, suspension covered. Engine block + transmission case typically excluded.

Coverage gap: Pre-existing damage from the original total-loss event is NEVER covered.

2. Concord Auto Protect

Concord is one of the few non-mainstream VSCs that explicitly covers branded titles.

Eligibility:

  • Branded title (any non-flood reason)
  • Recent state inspection
  • Mileage under 120,000

Coverage tiers:

  • Concord Silver (Salvage): $2,500-$3,500 for 4 years
  • Concord Gold (Salvage): $4,000-$5,500 for 6 years

Pricing is 30-50% higher than equivalent clean-title coverage.

3. CarShield (with exceptions)

CarShield will write VSCs on rebuilt titles in some states (CA, TX, FL, AZ) at premium pricing:

  • Diamond tier (rebuilt): $3,200-$4,800 for 7 years
  • Pre-existing condition explicit exclusion enforced

4. Olive

Olive's "Wear-and-Tear Plus" plan covers rebuilt titles in specific states:

  • Comprehensive (rebuilt): $2,800-$4,200 for 5 years
  • Engine + transmission internal components excluded

Providers that explicitly DON'T cover

  • CarMax MaxCare: Excludes branded titles
  • AutoNation Service Contracts: Excludes branded titles
  • AAA Vehicle Service Contracts: Excludes branded titles
  • Most captive dealer VSCs: Excluded
  • Endurance Premier (standard): Excluded (only the "Salvage" tier covers branded)

The documentation requirements

To qualify for branded-title VSC coverage:

  1. State title certificate showing "Rebuilt" or "Reconstructed" brand (NOT pure "Salvage")
  2. State inspection report post-rebuild
  3. Carfax or AutoCheck report showing the vehicle's history
  4. Bill of sale + odometer disclosure
  5. Photos of repaired vehicle (some VSC providers require)
  6. Mechanic inspection report confirming the rebuild quality (often required)

The premium math

For a rebuilt-title vehicle valued at $8,000 (post-rebuild market value):

Without any VSC:

  • Cost: $0 upfront
  • Risk: $4,000-$8,000 per major mechanical failure
  • Frequency: 5-10x higher than clean-title equivalent

With Endurance Premier (Salvage):

  • Cost: $3,400 (typical mid-range)
  • Coverage: 75% of mechanical failures over 5 years
  • Net expected savings: $1,500-$3,000 over 5 years

Best for:

  • Vehicles bought for under $10,000 (insurance value)
  • Long-term keep plans (5+ years)
  • Mechanically inclined buyers willing to inspect before signing

Skip if:

  • Vehicle is over 8 years old or 120k miles
  • You're buying for resale within 12 months
  • The repair quality is uncertain or photos show patch jobs

The "scrap value" alternative

For some rebuilt-title vehicles, the smartest move is to NOT buy extended coverage and instead:

  1. Set aside the VSC premium ($2,500-$4,000) as a self-insurance fund
  2. Drive until first major failure
  3. Compare repair cost vs scrap-value
  4. Replace if repair cost > 60% of vehicle value

This works when the VSC premium exceeds the realistic expected repair cost.

FAQs

Will an insurance company write full coverage on a salvage title?

Most major carriers (GEICO, Progressive, Allstate) write only liability + comprehensive on salvage titles. Full collision coverage is rarely available. State Farm and Liberty Mutual sometimes write full coverage on rebuilt titles with inspection.

Can a vehicle become "salvage" after I buy it (if I total it)?

YES — if you total your own vehicle and your insurance pays out, the carrier takes ownership and the vehicle is "salvaged". You can buy it back from the carrier at salvage value if you want to repair it yourself.

The bottom line

Buy a VSC on your rebuilt-title vehicle only if you've documented the rebuild quality, plan to keep the car 5+ years, and can afford the 30-50% premium over clean-title pricing. Endurance and Concord Auto Protect offer the widest coverage with the fewest hoops, but both exclude pre-existing damage and flood brands—so your vehicle history report needs to be spotless.

The math flips when your vehicle is worth less than $10,000 or has spotty rebuild documentation. In those cases, skip the VSC and bank the $2,500-$4,000 premium as a self-insurance fund. You'll likely come out ahead over five years, especially if you're mechanically capable and can handle minor repairs yourself.

Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck report before you do anything else—it determines whether any provider will even quote you.
